Just In from Savetheinternet.com: Call Your Senator Today

John T. Unger June 27, 2006

Yes, I know, Net Neutrality has nothing to do with hacking your blog. But it has everything to do with continuing to have the freedoms we currently enjoy online, so I feel that it's an important issue.

Without Net Neutrality legislation, there's a good chance that many of the services we enjoy as bloggers could soon become harder to find, slower to load, more expensive or disappear entirely. The Telecommunications Act is an attempt by a small number of large companies to kill competition in the marketplace of ideas by pricing smaller players (like bloggers) out of the running. The following just came in my email and I'm passing it on to you in hopes that you'll make a few calls today (right now actually. This is time sensitive).

A "mark-up" on several amendments to Senator Stevens' Telecom Act began today at 10 a.m. The Snowe-Dorgan Net Neutrality amendment will probably come before the Committee by mid-to-late afternoon. If successfully passed, the amendment would put Net Neutrality language into the massive Telecommunications Act. This is critical.

If your Senators sit on the committee, they need to hear from you immediately. Ask them to support the Snowe-Dorgan Net Neutrality amendment to the larger Telecom Act (S. 2686).

Members of the committee who have not taken a strong position in favor of Internet freedom and for the Snowe-Dorgan Amendment are listed after the "continue reading" link.

Please call them now. These phone calls actually make a difference.

I've been trying to keep up with this, and to be honest, it is a bit overwhelming. It seems as if there are a lot of loopholes and spin from each side. I do know one thing, anything that stifles progress is flat out wrong...
