I just noticed live spell check in my TypePad compose window. Misspelled words are underlined with a red dotted line. I got all excited thinking it was a new feature in TypePad until I realized that I had just installed Firefox 2.0. Oops. This is great though… I rarely use the TypePad native spell check (as you may have noticed). Posts with zero typos were probably written in Ecto.
Incidentally, if you type firefox in lowercase, it shows up as a spelling error, as does FireFox. TypePad shows up as a typo regardless of capitalization. So now I know for sure whose dictionary I'm using. Heh.
This is a great addition to my fave browser. And at least the spell check does know the words blog, blogger, and blogging. It used to make me a little crazy when the built-in spell checker flagged those words. It was silly.
I'd still love to be able to add custom words to the TypePad dictionary associated with user accounts, but hey, if I can find a way to add words to the Firefox dictionary on a Mac that's just as good.
LifeHacker reports that Firefox 2 includes the ability to add a word marked as a typo to the dictionary by simply right-clicking and choosing "Add to Dictionary" from the context menu. But that doesn't seem to be working on my powerbook. Life Hacker also points to a post by Amit Agarwal that contains instructions for altering the custom dictionary file for the Windows version of Firefox.
If any Firefox geeks can suggest a way to add custom words to the Mac version of Firefox, let me know in the comments!
